1912 Villisca,Iowa Axe Murders, Coroners Inquest
This isn't going to be like most of my past post. When I answered question #3 in yesterdays post, Tag, Your It I said that I would explain why I read, "1912 Villisca, Iowa Axe Murders, Coroners Inquest" at some time in the future. Well the anniversary of the Villisca, Iowa axe murders is just a few days off so I guess this would be a good time to do that. My Grand Mother passed away when my Mother was fairly young. From what I understand her Father didn't think a man should raise girls without the help of a woman in the house so he turned to family friends to raise his four Daughters, his two son's stayed with him. He didn't abandon the girls he went to visit as often as he could. My Mother went to live with Mr. & Mrs. C. A. Moore. I grew up calling them Grandpa and Grandma, they were the only Grand Parents I ever got to know, the others on both sides of the family passed away when I was very young. So, what does this have to do with me reading a coroners inquest?
On the evening of June 9, 1912 (Before my Mother went to live in the Moore home) the six members of the Josiah Moore (Brother to C. A. Moore) family and two young visiting guest, Lena and Ina Stillinger went to the Josiah Moore home after church. The next morning all eight of them were found dead. All eight of them were murdered with an axe. The case is Iowa's worst mass homicide and it is still unsolved. Since my Mother spent part of her time growing up in the home of C. A. Moore I feel like six of the victims are family, that's why I took an interest in the murders. I remember hearing about this a year or two ago because they made a PBS movie or something about the murders. It's such a gruesome mystery. A couple of friends and I had thought about just roadtripping across the midwest this summer, so that might have to be one of our stops.
Randy Weaver (Ruby Ridge) and I both lived on farms in the Villisca area when we were young.
