New Cancer Cure Coming

I just read something that I thought was kind of frightening. It wouldn't be so bad if it was the plot for a science fiction or horror movie, but this article was about medical research.

It says that an estimated 60,000 Americans will be diagnosed with melanoma this year, and that another 8,000 people will die from the disease. Researchers have been trying to find a cure using gene therapy with no side effects for 20 years. Now a team of scientists at the University of California in Los Angeles are claiming that the AIDS virus HIV can be modified to target melanoma. It says the same thing that makes HIV incurable, it's ability to seek out and destroy T-cells could do the same thing to cancer cells. The article goes on with more lab talk about how the virus would be modified making it safe to use.

In the past I have read several articles telling where AIDS came from in the first place. Some of them claim that the virus was man made. Maybe a team of scientists from a university somewhere were attempting to cure a disease and AIDS was the side effect. Now another team wants to use HIV/AIDS to cure cancer. I hope this stays in the lab, on paper for a good long while. If unleashed on the public I wonder what the next side effect might be.

God Bless America, God Save The Republic.
