I subscribe to a couple of what happened on this day in history e-mail messages. I was just a little ticked off today when I opened the one from ArcaMax Publishing and found, "In 1992, fugitive neo-Nazi leader Randall Weaver opened fire on U.S. marshals from inside his Idaho mountaintop home. His wife and teenage son and a deputy marshal died during the 11-day standoff". Randy and I lived in the same area (around Villisca, Iowa) when we were children. We can't remember if we knew each other back then. That was one of many things we talked about when we met a few years ago. When I was talking with Randy I didn't get the feeling that I was talking with a "neo-Nazi leader". I felt that I was talking with someone who loved his family very much and took them to the mountains because he didn't what his children exposed to all the problems teenagers have in large cites. I'm sure most of you know, but in case you have forgotten, check out what really happened around August 21, 1992.

That's an interesting, though truthful way to put it. I wonder if the editors thought that mentioning who did the actual killing would amount to political commentary?
If that is the case, when did it become political to report all the relevant facts?
I see this all the time in newspapers. Everyone knows it's bad writing to write in the passive voice. But newspapers do it to avoid assigning responsibility. The end result is the readers are confused.
