I have heard several definitions for the word "Politics". Today the best one I have ever seen was e-mailed to me by the Federalist Patriot, www.federalist.com . "Politics is the art of preventing people from taking part in affairs which properly concern them." Paul Valery.

I first learned politics in a band I joined. While the guitar player and I (singer), focused more on the art and performance side of things...the bass player and drummer were more interested in the business side of things. Being new many of my ideas were ignored. This is where I learned how to lobby! I would express my ideas to each individual before the business meetings occured and got their support. That way...when I brought the subject up...the idea got discussed.
So while one side of politics is the definition you described...the other side is just the opposite.
