Question Of The Week, 9/25/05

It seems like we have been reading about hurricanes for about a month now. I'm thinking that a months worth of articles about devastation, local, state and federal governments reaction time to a disaster and the ugly side of human nature should have taught America a very important lesson. So, this weeks Question Of The Week is. Did this years hurricane season teach us anything, if it did, what would that be? I'll post my answer in the comment section Monday night.

God Bless America, God Save The Republic.

It is hard to say. I give Jeb Bush credit for all the years Flordia has been hit by the hurricanes and the job he did, and Texas seems to have done a good job with Rita and helping New Orleans.

The problem with FEMA is that it is a overfunded group. When someone fails at their job you don't give them more money. We all seen how well the private groups could respond to a disaster with just a small amount of funds. I am afraid they will just get more funding and let the same thing happen again.

I hope we have learned something but I am affraid we will not know until tragedy strikes again.

1. When local authorities, for whatever reason, abrogate their responsibilities, the human suffering is overwhelming.

2. People want the government to solve too many of the rebuilding problems. A similar reliance on the government was part of the problem in the first place. It is not a citizen's entitlement that the government has to take care of the individual's needs.

3. Americans want instant results, with regard to the evacuation, the care of the victims, and the rebuilding. Not possible in such a large scale event!

4. Don't build below sea level and later neglect the protective walls. One day, the big storm will come. Complacency is deadly.

5. The power of nature is unavoidable and stronger than man.

6. Adversity brings out both the best and worst in people.

7. FEMA should not be the considered as the prime source for the solution.

I want to thank all of you for stopping by to answer this weeks question. All of you make some fine points. Always on watch hit upon what I think we should have learned this hurricane season, "(2)People want the government to solve too many of the rebuilding problems. A similar reliance on the government was part of the problem in the first place. It is not a citizen's entitlement that the government has to take care of the individual's needs." If we were taught anything at all by this hurricane season I feel it is the fact that the government is not always going to be there to meet your every need, it was never meant to be. All of us need to be more self reliant, no matter how prepared we think we are we need to do more. Remember Jabbar Gibson, I mentioned him in a Wednesday September 7, 2005 post, "Katrina Hero". While a lot of New Orleans residents were waiting for government aid Jabbar got himself and a bus load of Katrinas victims to safety. I feel we could all learn a lesson from Jabbar.

God Bless America, God Save The Republic.
